In celebration of the International Day for Combating Hate Speech, the Center for Monitoring and Countering Hate Speech at Masarat Foundation for Cultural and Media Development organized a dialogue workshop via virtual space on the reality of hate speech in Iraq, reviewing key figures and prospects for addressing it.
The workshop discussed the rise in levels of hate speech on social media over the past three years and its diversity.
The workshop, which included 24 participants from civil society activists and academics interested in the topic, analyzed the causes and roots of hate speech and proposed a set of recommendations aimed at controlling these narratives and reducing their impact.
It is planned that these recommendations will contribute to the preparation of Masarat’s draft strategy to confront hate speech, developed by the foundation after several years of work. The strategy outlines action plans in the legislative, parliamentary, governmental, judicial, educational, and religious fields, in addition to a draft law to criminalize hate speech, which was prepared by a specialized legal committee over two years.
