At the National Library and Archives in Baghdad, and in the presence of Iraqi elites from artists and academics, along with several advisors to the Prime Minister and general directors from the Ministry of Culture, the book “Culture of Cancellation” by Dr. Muntasser Al-Hassanawi was signed.
The book, published by Masarat Foundation in collaboration with Al-Rafidain House, is part of the series “Confronting Hate Speech.” It addresses this new phenomenon for the first time in Arabic. While the number of researchers analyzing the dimensions and global impacts of this culture has increased, the concept remains largely absent in the Arab context.
The book explores this culture after it has evolved from a marginal topic to one that crosses disciplines, examining its impact on social dynamics, media, politics, and the behavior of parties, leaders, institutions, and companies. It indicates the emergence of a new authority, namely the rise of fan cultures in contemporary intermediary environments.
The release of the book is part of the goal of the “Monitoring and Confronting Hate Speech Center” at Masarat Foundation, to shed light on a diverse range of issues related to social media, most notably: hate speech, misinformation, violent extremism, and finally, the critically important topic of “Culture of Cancellation.”
