In the Hall of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, participants in the camp “With Dialogue We Remain and Elevate” joined the international seminar titled “The Syriac Language in Iraq: From Historical Roots to Educational and Cultural Policies.”
Meetings with Religious and Community Leaders
Participants in the camp, launched by Masarat Foundation in cooperation with the House of Coexistence and Kaiciid, met on the sidelines of the seminar with several government figures, social leaders, religious leaders, and representatives of international community organizations. They discussed the importance of dialogue and the role of language in enhancing understanding of others. They focused their discussions with Christian and Mandaean religious leaders on highlighting the status of the Syriac language and the possibility of developing educational and cultural policies to preserve it.
Historical Roots of Syriac
Participants in the camp listened to discussions in sessions that addressed the historical roots of the Syriac language and its role in building Iraqi civilization, in addition to the current reality of the Syriac language and the challenges it faces. They also discussed proposed educational policies to revive the language in schools and universities, while learning about international experiences in preserving endangered languages.
Inclusion of the Syriac Language in Education
The seminar concluded with recommendations, the most prominent of which was the inclusion of the Syriac language as an elective subject in Iraqi curricula, and emphasizing the establishment of specialized research centers for the study of ancient Iraqi languages, as well as working to enhance cooperation between the government and academic institutions to implement projects for the preservation of Syriac heritage.
