Dr. Amina Golden, the Executive Director of the Masarat Foundation, stated that mechanisms to confront ideological extremism in the country should begin with addressing hate speech through the enactment of a strict law that does not infringe upon freedom of expression.
This was mentioned in a research paper presented by Golden at a workshop titled “Media and Its Impact on Combating Terrorism and Ideological Extremism,” organized by the Department of Human Studies at the Center for Reviving the Scientific Heritage of the Arab World at the University of Baghdad.
The research paper was titled “Analyzing and Deconstructing Hate Speech in Media and Social Media as a Mechanism to Combat Ideological Extremism.”
Golden discussed with the workshop participants the ways and mechanisms to break the chain of extremism that leads to violent extremism, as well as the importance of scrutinizing the news and information we receive through social media and verifying its sources before re-sharing and promoting it.
At the end of the workshop, the center’s director, Prof. Dr. Alaa Nafeh Jassim, presented a certificate of appreciation to the foundation and called for continued research and collaboration between the center and Masarat.
